Then I became a French sommelier. I poured a priceless Bordeaux into a tulip-shaped glass, twirling it to “breathe” the wine, admired the vertical lines (the legs) left by the alcohol on the glass’s inner walls, and held it above my head to gauge the wine’s color (the robe). I brought the rim to my nose to finish taking stock of all the qualities of this exceptional beverage before at last I splashed a little inside my mouth to put my taste buds to work—and then, at last, swallowed it.

I ended with a scene from a Russian party: guests drinking vodka in one gulp and throwing their empty glasses over the left shoulder!

“You see,” I said, “if in just a few words you had described the drinking, you would have brought life to the character and the scene.”
